Boxing gloves are an important piece of equipment for many martial artists. They protect the hands from injury and make it possible to hit harder and more efficiently. There are different types of boxing gloves for different purposes, such as boxing, muay thai, match gloves, sparring gloves, with laces or velcro.
- When looking for boxing gloves, it's important to choose the right size and fit for your hands. It is also good to think about the quality of the gloves, as this can affect their durability and level of protection. Many boxing gloves are made of leather, but there are also gloves made of synthetic material.
How do I choose the right model of boxing glove?
There are several different factors to consider when choosing boxing gloves. Here are some things to consider:
- Boxing or Muay Thai: Boxing gloves are usually a bit bigger and thicker in the front than Muay Thai gloves, as boxing focuses more on giving and taking big, powerful punches. Thai boxing gloves are usually a bit thinner and offer less protection than boxing gloves, as Thai boxing also includes clinch, kicks and knees. Both gloves are usually fine to use in the respective sport, as long as it concerns training and sparring.
- Size: Boxing gloves come in various weights, usually between 10oz and 16oz for adults. More weight in the glove means more padding. In matches, 8oz to 10oz is generally used. When training and sparring, many clubs recommend at least 14oz for an adult athlete, but 10oz to 12oz works great for, for example, young people and girls. Feel free to ask your club what they think!
- Material: Boxing gloves are usually made of leather or artificial leather. Leather is more expensive, but also more durable and breathes better. Artificial leather is cheaper, but also less durable and less breathable.
- Price: We have boxing gloves in a very wide price range, so it can be a good idea to compare different models and prices before choosing. Keep in mind that it is usually more beneficial to invest in a slightly more expensive, but high-quality glove than to buy a cheaper glove, if your aim is to train often and regularly.
What is meant by oz or ounce when talking about boxing gloves?
Oz (ounce) is a unit of measurement of weight commonly used in boxing gloves. One ounce equals approximately 28.35 grams (stuffing.) When it comes to boxing gloves, oz is used as an indication of how heavy the gloves are. The higher the weight in oz, the heavier the gloves are, and contains more padding. How much a glove weighs in Oz also determines the size of the glove. Kid gloves start there at around 2oz, up to 4oz, 6oz and 8oz for younger youngsters.
How do I care for my boxing gloves?
- It is important to care for your boxing gloves to get the longest life possible. The following tips can help you care for your gloves:
- Dry the gloves after each use. This helps prevent mold and bacterial growth, as well as keeping the gloves fresh and odor-free.
- Do not store them in a humid environment, as this can increase the risk of mold and bacterial growth. Store the gloves in a dry and cool place. Don't forget them in the training bag after the session! Let the gloves breathe.
- Place a dry towel or other absorbent material inside the gloves when not in use. This helps absorb moisture and keep the gloves dry. Alternatively, we sell products such as Smellwell and Freshfogger, these help absorb moisture and prevent bacteria and bad odors.
- Use boxing pads! We have a variety of boxing wraps that not only protect your hands, but also the gloves. With a pair of diapers that are washed regularly and a good fit, your gloves will stay fresh on the inside for longer.
- Try not to let the gloves get too dirty, as it can be difficult to clean them properly. If the gloves get too dirty, it may be a good idea to clean them with a mild soap and water solution.
